Meet our guide and visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial.Wind, sand, and the dream of flight brought Wilbur and Orville Wright to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where they achieved the first successful airplane flights on December 17, 1903. With courage and perseverance these self-taught engineers relied on teamwork and the application of scientific process.
On display in the visitor center are: a full-scale reproduction of the 1902 glider, a full-scale reproduction of the 1903 flying machine,an engine block from the original 1903 Flyer, and a reproduction of the Wright's first wind tunnel. Additional exhibits, movies and educational programs are available in the Centennial Pavilion.
Climb Big Kill Devil Hill for a breathtaking view of the area from sound to sea. Atop the Hill, stands the 60 ft. Pylon - the site where Wilbur and Orville conducted their glider experiments.
Stand on the same spot where the brothers made their first flights. A large granite boulder marks the spot where the first plane left the ground.

Visit The Currituck Beach Lighthouse at Corolla, the only light in North Carolina that is still housed in its original structure. The tower is 163 feet tall. First put into service on December 1, 1875, it still serves as an aid to navigation. Each of the many lighthouses in the region received distinctive painted exteriors to aid identification --except the light at Corolla. It was distinguished by being left unpainted, allowing the visitors to view nearly one million bricks!
Tour the Whalehead Club, a beautiful beach mansion with a copper roof, yellow exterior, and five stately chimneys. The magnificent display of Tiffany lighting fixtures, fine furnishing and elevator was something very unusual for the Outer Banks residents when built. Sold and once badly deteriorated, today the Whalehead Club an ongoing process in restoration to its former grandeur.
Visit the CurrituckWildlifeCenter. The OuterBanksCenter for Wildlife Education increases the public's knowledge of Currituck's wildlife and habitats. The center provides programs through which the general public and educators can learn about wildlife, natural history and outdoor skills.

Stroll through the ElizabethanGardens. The gardens are reached by the park road into FortRaleigh, and are a memorial to the first English colonists in America. This re-created, 16th-century formal English garden has antique statuary, period furniture and rose and herb beds in addition to indigenous flowers, shrubs and trees.
Visit FortRaleigh on Roanoke Island.A visitor’s center, interpretive programs and nature trail are open to the public. Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, along with her family and other colonists disappeared in this area, their whereabouts never discovered. They had left behind the comfortable limits and familiar rhythms of European civilization for a boundless and unpredictable world in which vigilance, courage, and endurance were needed just to survive.

Cross The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel designated "One of Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World" in 1965. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is a four-lane 20-mile-long vehicular toll crossing of the lower Chesapeake Bay. There are manmade islands, each approximately 10 acres in size, located at each end of the two tunnels. There are also high-level bridges over two other navigation channels: North ChannelBridge and FishermanInletBridge.
Stop for a photo opportunity at the manmade island overlook/rest area. Looking east is the Atlantic; looking west is the Chesapeake.
